The subject of this page is Astrology and Popular culture.  In the past several years, I have published over 30 articles on astrology and culture in the world's leading astrology magazine, Dell Horoscope.  Some of those articles will be reprinted here. As many of these essays were written before the advent of computers, it will take me a while before I can scan those typewritten pages into my computer. Bear with me.  It will take time, as I am currently working on a three book project which is engaging my full attention.

Meanwhile, enjoy this reprint of my five part series of articles "Re-discovering the Outer Planets," which was first published in Dell Horoscope in 1982. Also, currently on my website is my article "Creative Voices of the Outer Planets", which was first published in Dell Horoscope, August 1991. Finally, be sure to read "Sex in the '90s", a four part series on the transformations about sex in our culture that accompanied Pluto's recent transit of Scorpio, which was first published in Dell Horoscope in 1993. Below, you will find excerpts from these ten articles. To read more, press on the link and you'll be taken to the complete article. Thank you for your interest in my work.

(Published in Dell Horoscope, August 1991)

EXCERPT  "It seems to make sense at least on paper that the link between personal creativity and culture (the effect of personal creativity on the world at large) can sometimes be explained by interaspects between the outer and personal planets in a chart. I think everyone would agree that Bob Dylan's The Times Are A-Changin' awakened his whole generation to that fact, and that his contribution to culture is indeed a reflection of his natal Saturn-Uranus conjuncton in Taurus, for he does speak out against those who "do what they do just to be / nothing more than what they invest in." 2 His indictment of material values and the need for changes are indeed reflective of this outer planet combination; and yes, his Sun is conjunct Uranus..."  Rediscovering the Outer Planets     A five part series by Daniel Heydon

 Part 1     Introduction

EXCERPT "I call this series of articles "Re-discovering the Outer Planets". Could it be that astrologers overlooked important events that occurred at the time of the outer planets' discovery? I believe so. Much of what's written in the following pages will be new to astrologers; yet will be supportive of what we already know of the outer planets' significance." Read More

Part 2      Does The Discovery of the Outer Planets Invalidate the Astrology of the   Ancients?  - URANUS

EXCERPT "When a new planet is discovered, it is accompanied by a new principle and related events on earth. The astrologer doesn't arbitrarily choose facts to go along with what he thinks the planets should mean, though he does include in his estimation the mythological symbolism associated with the planet's name.... " Read More              (Published in Dell Horoscope, August 1982)

Part 3       Does the Discovery of the Outer Planets Invalidate the Astrology of the Ancients?  - NEPTUNE (part 1)

EXCERPT "On September 19,1846, four days before the discovery of Neptune, a weeping Virgin Mary appeared to two little boys in La Salette, France. She was dressed in bursts of light and wore slippers edged in roses. She spoke of her suffering because the villagers frequently cursed in the name of the Lord and few people bothered to reserve the Sabbath for prayer. She warned of an impending famine..." Part 4      Does the Discovery of the Outer Planets Invalidate the Astrology of the Ancients? - NEPTUNE  (part 2)

EXCERPT "Eighteen forty-eight saw the beginnings of the movement known as spiritualism, which had its heydey during the 1850's, a time during which mediumship became widespread. It all started on March 3I, 1848, in Rochester, New York, when two young girls of the Fox family heard mysterious rappings in their home. According to them, the strange noises came from the spirit of a peddler who told them he had been murdered by the house's previous owner and occupant..."  Part 5      Does the Discovery of the Outer Planets Invalidate the Astrology of the Ancients? - PLUTO

EXCERPT "Since Pluto was first sighted on January 21,1930, the world has witnessed the horrors of Hiroshima, Hitler, and Dachau—and the rise of modern-day terrorism. We need not rewrite the history of World War II in these pages to give evidence that Pluto is indeed a planet whose movements at times coincide with mass destruction and death..." Read More. img018a.jpg   Sex in the '90s  A Four Part Series by Daniel Heydon

Part 1      Pluto in Scorpio transformations about sex in our culture.

EXCERPT "Let's talk about sex, baby ... let's talk about you and me" begins the super hit by Salt-‘n’-Pepa.  If anyone thinks that sex was dead in the ‘90s because of the AIDS crisis, they are mistaken. Perhaps, in this age of "say no to drugs, say yes to condoms," it's natural that the fear surrounding sex in daily life would translate into an obsession in art with what is repressed in life. ...Read More ( Published in Dell Horoscope, June 1993)

Part 2    Sexual Harrassment and Obsessive Love

EXCERPT Obsessive love as a grand passion is ruled by Pluto. But if we mean by "obsessive love" the experience of unrequited love, then we are talking about Neptune, most especially Venus/Neptune aspects, but also Neptune in any aspect to a personal natal planet. Quite often the sufferer of unrequited love is often in love with a Plutonian type. When we read of unrequited love that turns into a crime of passion, such as in the film Fatal Attraction (1990). we are again talking about Pluto, especially when in Scorpio.....Read More (Published in Dell Horoscope July 1993)

       Part 3      Madonna, Pornography, Violence

EXCERPT In 1976, with Uranus in Scorpio there were some 780 adult movie houses throughout the country that ran porn 52 weeks a year. But just as the burlesque theatre went out of existence with the advent of movies, so did the pornographic movie theatre begin to seem dated in the early '80s with the advent of the sex-videotape revolution.....Read More (Published in Dell Horoscope August 1993)

Part 4       Date Rape, Child Abuse, Incest

EXCERPT As astrologer Liz Greene notes in her book The Astrology of Fate , whenever in mythology Pluto left his domain in Hades and made an entrance to the upper world, it was accompanied by a rape. 1 This link between Pluto and rape holds true in astrology as well, for whenever an outer planet is in Pluto's sign, Scorpio, the issue of rape is a matter of public concern.....Read More
